Should I Hire a Web Designer, or Build it Myself?

UpdateAs a web designer, it should come as no surprise that my personal preference is that you hire me to build your website. That being said, my professional opinion is that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with building it yourself. After all, you know your product, your brand, and your image better than anyone else, and being in the driver’s seat can give you an advantage in that regard. However, there are two distinct drawbacks that come with building your own website, which I will explain in this article.

  1. The first and potentially biggest drawback to building your own website is that the end result is going to be limited by your technical knowledge. Do you know how to make your website responsive to desktop and mobile browsers? Do you know how to ensure your SSL certificate is up to date, so clients feel secure when viewing your site? Do you know how to make sure your site meets current SEO standards, which will increase the likelihood of getting picked up by search engines?
  2. The second drawback to designing your own site is that you’re going to be limited to what the do-it-yourself (DIY) software can produce. What if you want to change the font, the color, rearrange pictures, resize the logo, or change how information is displayed on specific pages? These are things that are easily done by an experienced web designer on the right platform, but can be challenging when faced with software limitations.

Now, I’m not going to say anything negative about DIY companies such as Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, Weebly, etc. Those services are all incredibly useful in the right situation, and are even ideal for certain clients. But for a small business or independent professional who wants a greater degree of customization, who wants higher functionality, or who just doesn’t want to hassle with the time it takes to build a website, there’s another option.
